Formula Two champion Charles Leclerc will graduate to F1 with Sauber next season. The Ferrari youngster impressed with a dominant Formula 2 campaign, capping his championship-winning year with victory in the final race in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. The Italian auto manufacturer is making a return to the sport after 30-years to sponsor the team.

The vehicle is predominantly white with red accents, and large Alfa Romeo logos after the Swiss team confirmed a deal with the manufacturer.

That speculation ended on Saturday at an event in Italy where Ericsson - who had been up against Ferrari junior Antonio Giovinazzi for the seat - was confirmed for a third season with the team.

"It was a great experience to drive a few FP1 sessions and tyre tests for the Sauber F1 Team in 2017, during which the team welcomed me straight away", said Leclerc. The title sponsorship deal means the team will be called Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 and the multi-year partnership comes with technical and commercial benefits.

Fiat Chrysler have invested billions of euros since 2014 to develop new Alfa Romeo models that would stand up against German premium rivals and shed a reputation for poor quality and service that has hit sales in the past decade.

Formula One chairman Chase Carey and former Ferrari boss Jean Todt, president of the governing FIA, both attended the presentation. "First and foremost, I would like to thank Ferrari for their support".

The news was announced Saturday as the team's Formula One auto was also unveiled with it's slick red and white colouring with a prominent Alfa Romeo logo.
