Muted Christmas in Nazareth in Protest Against Trump's Jerusalem Declaration

This year's Christmas market and festival will not be taking place, however, as Muslim political and world leaders continue condemning Trumps' decision from last week.

Some Christmas celebrations have been canceled in Nazareth - the Israeli city where the Bible says Jesus grew up - as a protest against President Donald Trump's controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Reuters reported.

"Our identity and faith aren't up for debate", Salam told The Times of Israel. "The decision has taken away the joy of the holiday, and we will thus cancel the festivities this year". Newsweek reported that the cancellation will impact the local economy "severely", as tens of thousands of people usually travel to the town during the Christmas season for the festivities.

"Reports that Christmas events were canceled this year are incorrect", said Ali Salam who is mayor of the town in northern Israel.

The Basilica of the Annunciation in central Nazareth is located on a site that many Christians believe was the childhood home of Mary, Jesus' mother, Reuters noted.

He framed the move as a response to President Donald Trump's statement acknowledging Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Mr Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital city, was a significant USA policy change.

"There are major moments in the history of Zionism: the Balfour Declaration, the founding of the state, the liberation of Jerusalem and Trump's announcement yesterday", he said in a video posted to social media. "This shows the world that Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is not up for negotiation, and America is and shall always remain a loyal ally of Israel". Brotherly covenant referred to Salam's announcement as a "cynical move to take advantage of Christian residents", TPS reported.

He told the BBC: "He is declaring war in the Middle East, he is declaring war against 1.5 billion Muslims (and) hundreds of millions of Christians that are not going to accept the holy shrines to be totally under the hegemony of Israel".
