Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta - the busiest airport in the world - lost power on Sunday reportedly leaving some passengers trapped in planes and inside the airport terminals.

DENVER -A power outage at the world's busiest airport is impacting travel at Denver International Airport just as the Christmas travel rush begins to ramp up.

The company had said it "believed" the outage was caused by a fire that damaged an underground facility and affected substations serving the airport.

The power cut halted all outgoing flights, and arriving planes were held on the ground at their point of departure. Thomas says Delta added roughly 20 flights, booked passengers on empty seats on regular Monday flights, and found places for them on other airlines.

Emilia Duca, 32, a Delta passenger, was on her way to Wisconsin from Bogota, Colombia, when she got stuck in Atlanta. After initial anxiety inside Terminal B, she said, things had calmed down by about 4:30 p.m. - even as there was little indication of when power would be restored. "If you are planning to fly to/from Atlanta be sure to check with your airline for flight status". A travel waiver has been issued for Delta customers flying to, from or through Atlanta allowing customers to make one-time changes to their travel plans. The airline also encouraged travelers not to pick up their bags on Monday because of anticipated congestion at the airport. Green said the pilot told passengers that other flights that had ran out of fuel were evacuated before theirs.

"We certainly understand that the outage has caused frustration and anger and we are doing everything that we can to get folks back home right away", Reed said at a Sunday night news conference.

The Jacksonville International Airport is experiencing delays and cancelations of flights coming to and from Atlanta, according to the airport's website. "We are stuck here", she said. At least ten flights were listed as canceled Monday morning. The airport handles around 2,500 arrivals and departures, according to the airport's figures. The airline also diverted three planes that were headed to Atlanta when the outage struck, sending them instead to Dallas, Nashville and back to Philadelphia.

It is not known how many flights may be affected. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but nothing suggests it was set deliberately, he said.

Some passengers reported being stuck in airplanes on the tarmac for hours.

At Southwest Airlines, about 70 Atlanta departures out of 120 scheduled for Sunday were cancelled, an airline spokesman said in an email.

Mozell Smith, 58, of Atlanta arrived at the airport hours after the electricity went off. Almost 2,500 planes arrive and depart each day.
