North Korea begins testing mounting anthrax onto ICBMs, report says

The Trump administration also said in its National Security Strategy document released this week that the rogue regime was developing a missile capable of carrying biological weapons.

North Korea has reportedly started "loading" tests with intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) using a deadly biological agent called anthrax, the Japanese newspaper Asahi reported Wednesday, citing a South Korean source.

He told MPs: "We are looking at North Korea which within the next 12 to 18 months will make a nuclear missile to an intercontinental range ballistic missile that could reach London and we can't deal with that".

According to Newsweek, Anthrax contaminates the body when spores enter it, multiplying and spreading an illness that could be fatal.

The report adds that the source in Seoul said Pyongyang is likely seeking to develop ICBMs tipped with anthrax warheads because its nuclear-tipped ICBMs have yet to attain the capability to strike all of the USA mainland.

"The DPRK, as a state party to the Biological Weapons Convention, maintains its consistent stand to oppose development, manufacture, stockpiling and possession of biological weapons", the North's Institute for American Studies, affiliated with the foreign ministry, was quoted as saying by the Korean Central News Agency.

North Korea has a stockpile of between 2,500 tonnes to 5,000 tonnes of chemical weapons, and is capable of producing biological agents such as anthrax and smallpox, South Korea stated. They'll be joined by additional countries including Japan, South Korea, and India.

In its response, North Korea said the claims in the report were "the USA stereotyped method to cook up untruths as truths, stubbornly insisting that black is white and fabricating anything for satisfying their aggressive greed".

This suggests that the alleged tests are taking place in laboratories, rather than in actual warheads on recent North Korean ICBM tests. The marriage of biological weapons with long range missiles at first glance sounds like nightmare fuel, but sounds freaky given the country's emphasis on nuclear weapons. North Korea is the only nation among the combatants that still clings to these claims.

The report, based off of a source in South Korea, said that it did not have confirmation about whether the tests had been successful.

To combat any attack from its neighbor, with which South Korea technically remains at war, South Korean scientists have been working to train artificial intelligence that can detect anthrax at fast speeds.

The North's widely-condemned nuclear and missile programs have made significant progress under leader Kim Jong-Un, who has overseen four nuclear tests and dozens of missile launches since taking power in 2011.
