All iOS and Mac devices affected by Meltdown and Spectre, Apple confirms

"Analysis of these techniques revealed that while they are extremely hard to exploit, even by an app running locally on a Mac or iOS device, they can be potentially exploited in JavaScript running in a web browser", Apple said.

Meltdown affects only Intel Corp chips and Spectre affects almost all computer chips made in the last decade.

Pointing out that the risks are likely to come from "a malicious app", Apple also advised users to download software "only from trusted sources such as the App Store".

Intel confirmed a potential security flaw in its chips causing all tech majors to rush to fix the bugs through emergency updates to supported versions.

Researchers said nearly every computing system - desktops, laptops, smartphones, and cloud servers - is affected by the Spectre bug.

Analysis of these techniques revealed that while they are extremely hard to exploit, even by an app running locally on a Mac or iOS device, they can be potentially exploited in JavaScript running in a web browser. The company says that is "has developed and is rapidly issuing updates for all types of Intel-based computer systems", but it is not clear when - or whether - older devices will be treated to patches.

Just hours after a computer chip flaw exposed majority of smartphones, computers, cloud storage, tablets and laptops to malicious activities, Apple today admitted that all of its iPhones, iPads and computers have been affected by the processor flaw, which could leave it vulnerable to hackers.

The tech development expert has said the Apple watch isn't affected by Meltdown and that it has already released updates to protect other products from that problem. "We continue to develop and test further mitigations for these issues and will release them in upcoming updates of iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS", Apple added. As we told you, Google's Android Security patch for January will help protect Android users from having passwords held in a browser, or in a password manager, stolen by a nameless, faceless hacker.

Apple said it would issue a patch to its Safari web browser for those devices 'in the coming days'.

Apple has already released mitigations in iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2 to help defend against Meltdown.

"Both the "Spectre" and "Meltdown" flaws affect the performance of CPU feature called Speculative Execution" which is responsible for improving speed and operate multiple operations.
