Vivo to soon launch a phone with under-display fingerprint sensor

Vivo's first smartphone with in-display fingerprint scanner is said to launch in the first half of this year. This fingerprint sensor only requires one touch to access the smartphone.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is in full swing, and Vivo has just shown off the world's first smartphone with a working in-display fingerprint scanner.

However, Vivo's new revolutionary technology will allow company to develop slimmer handsets as they will no more need additional space to incorporate separate module like for the metal-based finger-print sensor.

It will be interesting to see how the new biometric scanning technology will affect the smartphone usage and the industry trends.

Currently, the in-display fingerprint scanner is already in mass production and the availability will be announced in early 2018.

The use of glass will also help the manufacturer to make the phone water-proof (IP68 or beyond), as well. The in-sensor fingerprint sensor will be placed between the mainboard and the OLED panel.

CES 2018 has not been about smartphones much this time around, but that isn't stopping Vivo from making its presence felt.

The Chinese smartphone maker showcased the latest technology at CES 2018.

According to the senior VP at Vivo (Alex Feng), the device will provide a more comfortable authentication experience and it will be officially announced early 2018.

"With our efforts in extensive consumer research and long-term R&D investment, Vivo is well positioned to pioneer the development of fingerprint scanning technology". A fingerprint scanner under the display has not yet launched in any commercially available smartphone.

"Today's showcase of a ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone with an optical fingerprint sensor is a step forward in bringing consumers this futuristic mobile experience".
