Police in Spain seized more than 1642 pounds of cocaine that were hidden in pineapples from South America.

Through August past year, Sri Lankan customs seized six shipments of high-quality South American cocaine in 14 months, including Asia's largest-ever haul of the drug in December 2016, at its main port.

Investigators said the drugs were smuggled as part of an operation run by a pair of Colombian brothers who operated laboratories near Madrid, the Spanish capital. The cocaine was covered in yellow wax and then covered with previously-hollowed pineapple skins.

A laboratory where the drug was cut with additives was also discovered and dismantled by the authorities.

Police believe that the disguised cocaine shipment travelled from Panama to the port of Lisbon by sea. Hydraulic presses, packaging machines and over 400,000 Euros in cash were also seized in the raid.

Portuguese investigators released a statement stating that the Iberian Peninsula is a major route for drug smugglers: "This organised global group had repeatedly brought large quantities of cocaine to the European continent".
