Steve Wilks named Cardinals head coach

Wilks, who served as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers last season, becomes the team's 10th head coach since the franchise moved to the desert in 1988. The Cardinals have scheduled a press conference Tuesday to formally introduce Wilks.

Prior to signing on with the Panthers, Wilks was the defensive backs coach for the Chicago Bears (2006-2008) and then the San Diego Chargers (2009-2011). During that span the Panthers defensive line has recorded more sacks (219) than any team in the NFL.

After Sean McDermott left to coach the Buffalo Bills following the 2016 campaign, Carolina promoted Wilks to his current spot. The Arizona Cardinals lost both coach Bruce Arians and quarterback Carson Palmer to retirement in the past few weeks and it seems like they have decided on a replacement for one of those positions, per Mike Garafolo.

He was really aggressive, blitzing more than 44 percent of the time (the league average was 29.3 percent), according to Pro Football Focus data.

There will be challenges for Wilks, who is 48 years old.

Despite mediocre numbers from the Arizona defense in 2017, Wilks inherits quite a lot of talent on that side of the ball.

Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson apparently heard the news. The only caveat is that Wilks ran a 4-3 scheme in Carolina while Arizona had a 3-4 defense under Arians.
