A Maltese mix was badly injured from the hair coloring product her previous owner used on her fur. "Let's all say that together-Do NOT, under any circumstances, use hair color intended for humans on your pets", the post warned.

A dog in Florida almost died after a purple hair dye job left her with severe burns and swollen eyes, according to an animal shelter.

In a now-viral Facebook post, Pinellas County Animal Services in November told the story of Violet with a series of graphic images hoping to deter pet owners from using human hair products on animals.

She was brought to Pinellas County Animal Services in Florida where she was given fluids, pain medication and was wrapped in bandages. Besides the burns, her eyes were swollen shut, and she was left weak. "It was so much worse than we initially thought - how would this little dog make it through?" The dog's skin was so damaged it started to slough off after the staff shaved the animal's hair.

Three month later, Violet is recovering from her injuries, despite being off to a very grim start.

After her long road to recovery that included lots of painkillers, antibiotics, scab removal, and even being connected to a drip for a while, she is now healthy again and has a new home thanks to the kind folk who rescued her.

The care the dog received appeared to be working.

'It was clear - Violet was on the mend and she wanted everyone to know it'.

Rescuers from Pinellas County Animal Services were also anxious she might go blind.

After a gentle bath, pain medication and fluids she was taken home by the shelter's vet for the night. Violet starts walking and starts making noise as well.

"And if we ever get an owner identified who did this, then we will work with law enforcement to try and pursue charges", Brightwell said.

"Once a attractive little white Maltese mix, Violet was dyed a purple color (her namesake)... only the purple parts weren't like the pictures you usually see", the shelter wrote on Facebook.

She now lives with a new family. The dog is also reportedly doing well.
