A rare lunar occurrence is set to be enjoyed by most of the world as eyes will turn to the skies when our moon becomes a Super Blue Blood Moon - for the first time in 150 years.

The super-duper-exciting-plus-sprinkles phenomenon hasn't happened for over a century, because it consists of three rare moon-related events occurring all at once: a super moon, a blue moon and a lunar eclipse.

Dr Vijay Bhaskar, director of Centre of Space Medicine, has meanwhile asked citizens not to encourage superstitions associated with the lunar eclipse.

Stargazers will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view the Super Blue Blood Moon on January 31, as the Astronomical Society of the South West point their telescopes to the sky for the special occurrence.

A supermoon is a full moon that is closest in its orbit to the Earth. The second full moon in January, known as a blue moon, will sink below the horizon shortly after that.

This type of eclipse occurs when the sun, earth and moon are aligned in a straight line and the earth is between the sun and the moon.

Albertans wanting to see one can just look west early Wednesday morning without any kind of help or protection.

The entire celestial event will be webcast live by global space agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) starting at 5:30 a.m. EST (1030 GMT). Otherwise, your view of the sinking moon partly in Earth's darkest shadow (umbra) will be blocked. Supermoons appear about 7 percent larger than an average full moon and as much as 15 percent brighter, according to NASA. Pacific Time, although the shadow will start appearing on the moon at approximately 3:48 a.m.

A#Total Lunar Eclipse is predicted to occur in the early hours of January 31.
