Vonn opens up, will ski for more than herself in Pyeongchang

Now American Lindsey Vonn, the poster girl of the Winter Olympics, has asked her friends on the Norwegian men's ski team to find her a new man.

In 2010 at Vancouver, Vonn broke out, winning gold ans putting herself on the map.

Vonn's only regret is that her grandfather, Don Kildow, won't be able to watch her compete in the country in which he served in the US military.

Vonn was only 17 in her first Games in 2002 in Salt Lake City.

"I've gotten back to my roots in skiing and reminded myself I'm not here just for wins but I'm here because I love the sport", she said.

"She's a definitely a bigger star than me", said Vonn, unabashedly making goo-goo eyes at Lucy, as her faithful companion sat at the foot of stage, where the greatest downhill racer in USA history took measure of all the big victories and painful injuries in her career. It's really hard for me not to cry.

"But I'm still here, because I want to live for the future, not the past. But I know he's watching, and I know that he's going to help me, and I'm going to win for him".

"You taught me to be tough, to be kind, and above all, to ski fast", Vonn said in an Instagram post shortly after his death, one of many social media postings hailing the influence of her grandfather, who was ironically stationed not far from the Jeongseon Alpine Centre when he served with the U.S. army during the Korean War.

"It's going to be so close on Sunday as a result", said the 27-year-old, who upset a host of favoured rivals to claim a shock win before he'd even claimed a World Cup downhill victory.

"She's usually in the hotel room whenever I'm racing", Vonn said.

Yet those two wins last weekend were the 80th and 81st of her career.

Even donned the gloves for her flight to South Korea.

"In 2010 I was a much healthier athlete but in 2018 I am a much stronger athlete". Before Vonn headed back onto the World Cup circuit last fall, she made what has become an annual sojourn back to their simple house, where she sleeps on a house in the basement.

Denied her presence in Sochi four years ago through injury, the organisers gave her star billing here in a packed session that justified the indulgence. "I know he's looking out for me", she said, "and that actually gives me a lot of peace of mind".

"I obviously have been waiting a very long time for these Olympics", Vonn said.

Austria's defending Olympic champion Matthias Mayer said the course was "much easier" than the icy challenge that was the downhill in Sochi.

"I would like to compete in everything", she said. Not just physically but also mentally. I got Lucy, she travels with me everywhere.

"You're insane", Shiffrin replied. Linsdey Vonn has been an Olympian since she was a teenager.
