Bears give CB Fuller transition tag

After a strong bounce-back season in 2017 from cornerback Kyle Fuller, the Chicago Bears are giving themselves an opportunity to keep him from leaving as a free agent. Meaning the Raiders will have to look elsewhere to upgrade their beleaguered secondary this offseason.

This means that the Bears can offer a one-year contract to Fuller that is the average of the top ten cornerback salaries in the NFL.

The transition tag also affords the Bears more time than the July 15 franchise tag deadline to hammer out a long-term deal with the DB. A first round draft pick in 2014, Fuller finished 2017 with a career-high 69 tackles and 22 passes defended along with two interceptions. He was fourth on the Bears in total tackles with 68 and was one of only two National Football League players with at least 65 tackles and 20 pass breakups.

It's worth wondering if confidence in the ability to re-sign Fuller has played into the Bears' decision to not use the tag.

The Bears have plenty of money to keep Fuller and now seem motivated to retain their original investment.

Last week at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, Bears general manager Ryan Pace characterized the team's talks with Fuller as, "pretty aggressive", and added, "Obviously we like Kyle, and he had a good season, and we're happy with the way he's progressed".

The only other corners on the current roster are Marcus Cooper and Cre'Von LeBlanc.

Although Amukamara has been a solid starter for the past six seasons, Fuller clearly was the better player in 2017. He collected three interceptions and two forced fumbles in his first three games of his rookie season. Since they decided not to exercise the fifth year option for their former first round pick, Fuller had the chance to hit the free agent market next week-that is, if the Bears decided not to tag him.
