McDonald's flips its golden arches to celebrate women's day

Burger kings of the high street McDonald's have flipped their iconic golden arches upside down.

"Additionally, in select 100 restaurants across the US, guests will see packaging, crew shirts and hats all celebrating International Women's Day". The move has sparked debate on social media, however, with some calling it a "cheap PR stunt".

While McDonald's may want more women to eat their burgers and fries, they already have a fan in self-described non-feminist Donald Trump. Brands from Mattel to Nike have created products or campaigns in celebration of International Women's Day.

Meanwhile, other Twitter users pointed to the hypocrisy of the chain celebrating women's day while continuing to underpay its staff.

And it appears that the fast-food chain is turning all of its M's upside down for the celebrations - but the rest of the stores are taking the easier route and doing it digitally.

Company information states that 62 percent of the McDonald's workforce in the female and that six out of 10 of restaurant managers are women.

A special video shared by McDonald's features California franchise owner, Patricia Williams, who describes how she went from scraping everything she had together to buy her first restaurant to becoming the owner of 18 locations. "McDonald's takes pride in diversity and proud to share the same today", McDonald's spokesperson Lauren Altmin said. And since it is Women's Day, popular brands can not sit aback.

McDonald's Owner, Nicole Enearu, said taking the iconic arch and flipping it demonstrates how important International Women's Day is to them.

Others celebrated the company's decision to flip the restaurant's logo. McDonald's has also repeatedly ignored complaints of serious workplace sexual harassment and refused to support workers' demands for a $15 minimum wage.
