Will there be a Ready Player One sequel?

Breathlessly name-checking everything from Atari games to "Back to the Future" to Rush's "2112' album, it was like a literary adaptation of the basement of my best friend in high school".

And who better to balance this mix of grim warning and sugar-coated love letter to nostalgia than Steven Spielberg; one of the key architects of all that '80's culture Ready Player One is so gleefully mining. So I'm not anxious at all about anybody getting stuck in nostalgia because nostalgia is what we're not getting enough of right now in my opinion. Though much of the film is spent looking at CGI avatars rather than the character's real human faces, the transitions between scenes in the real and virtual worlds are smooth and natural in the universe the filmmakers have set up. When the OASIS was created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance), he embedded a three-part contest into it to find a worthy heir for his enormous fortune and total control of this virtual world, and as Wade and his friends, called the High Five, take on the challenge, they put themselves directly into the path of danger.

In theaters ThursdayColumbus, Ohio, teenager Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) isn't much different from most folks living in the mid-21st century. He later shares the secret to survival with friends Art3mis (Olivia Cooke) and Aech (Lena Waithe). It is where you get your education, your entertainment, and quite probably your relationships. "It's a must-see movie." said Eva.

While the idea of an OASIS-afterlife seems to fly in the face of the message about valuing reality because it's real, exploring the ramifications of just such a concept is compelling material for a sequel to cover.

After James Halliday (played by Mark Rylance), the brilliant inventor of the OASIS dies, he launches a challenge for people in the virtual world to win his fortune and control OASIS.

The move comes one day after the United States announced that it will expel 60 Russian diplomats suspected of espionage. Tuesday's decision follows "Russia's lack of constructive response to what happened in Salisbury", the statement said.

"Ready Player One" is a long-overdue opportunity for Spielberg to once again allow his geek flag to fly freely and the 71-year-old fills every frame with characters, vehicles, weapons and consumer products from a specific era in American popular culture. There is also some confusion, I think, about exactly who the film is aimed at.

Of course, an evil corporation called IOI, run by Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), wants to win the Oasis so they can turn it from a game to a money-printing advertising space. While it would be a stretch to call her "memorable", she is no longer only defined as a great video game player because she is nearly as good as Wade. As he did with his underrated version of "Tintin", Spielberg keeps the action furious but also rather elegantly staged, whether it's a go-for-broke auto race or a zero-gravity dance off.

"The virtual world vehicle chase was a heck of a lot safer than if I had tried to create those exact shots with those exact stunts in the real world", said Spielberg. Largely but not exclusively rooted in 1980s pop culture trivia, everything from Batman to Marty McFly, Joan Jett to The Iron Giant, and Star Wars to Tootsie Pops makes an appearance.

While the film is a ton of fun, there are a few places where the story suffers, whether from a rush to get to the next exciting set piece, or a desire to make things too memorable. There's a bit of a moral for our perpetually-connected society, and it's a relief to realize that this incarnation of Ready Player One isn't going to be entirely about its name-dropping. Screenplay by Zak Penn and Ernest Cline. The only standout is Mark Rylance as Halliday, who nails the awkward asocial pioneer of the book.
