Takahata was reportedly suffering from lung cancer.

And the late Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Roger Ebert once called the movie "an emotional experience so powerful that it forces a rethinking of animation". Over the next 25 years, Takahata would direct a further four films for Studio Ghibli: Only Yesterday (1991), Pom Poko (1994), My Neighbours the Yamadas (1999) and The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013).

Although less commonly in the spotlight than Studio Ghibli's other co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki, his contribution to Japan's most famous animation house can hardly be underestimated. Earlier, he worked for Toei Animation.

Isao Takahata takes last breath at the age of 82.

He launched the prestigious Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli with animator Hayao Miyazaki in 1986, hoping to create Japan's Disney. It tells the story of two siblings, Seita and Setsuko, and their desperate struggle to survive during the final months of the Second World War.

Takahata's films featured a slew of complex female characters. He directed "Grave of the Fireflies", a tragic tale about war time childhood.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, adapted from an ancient fairytale about a foundling child, explores the lead's personal conflict against the oppressive society she lives in.

He was planning to do a film about exploited girls, forced to work as nannies with infants strapped on their backs.

Takahata's Grave of Fireflies is a classic example of an anti-war movie.

"France is the country I have travelled in most and I am extremely happy to have been decorated by the nation to which I feel closest", he said in his acceptance speech.

"This earth is a good place, not because there is eternity", Takahata once said.
