During the talks with delegations from India side, which also includes the one led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mr Oli is most likely to discuss possible deals in waterways as well as the expansion of India-backed railway to Kathmandu. The relations between India and Nepal took a nosedive thereafter with his Government accusing India of causing instability and economic blockage.

Modi said there has been a long history of India's contribution towards Nepal's development and that he has assured Oli that it will continue.

The Nepalese Prime Minister underscored the significance of friendship at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, saying, "Friendship is most important and there is no comparison with friendship".

Nepal is to host the summit of BIMSTEC countries-a bloc that groups together select countries from South and Southeast Asia, something India is keen to promote given that India-Pakistan tensions over cross border terrorism has seen another region grouping in South Asia-SAARC-flounder. Prime Minister Modi congratulated the people and the Nepalese government for successful conduct of local level, federal parliament and first-ever provincial elections in Nepal and appreciated their vision for stability, and development. Oli was accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, Ministers Matrika Yadav and Raghubir Mahaseth, Political Advisor to the PM Bishnu Rimal and Foreign Affairs Ministry officials at the meeting.

He said, India would like to improve waterways and rail connectivity.

In his comments, Oli mentioned about the enormous impact this additional connectivity would have on the growth of business and economy of Nepal.

Oli also said that Nepal wished to be as prosperous as India, adding that New Delhi was Kathmandu's largest trading partner.

India and Nepal have agreed to boost bilateral ties with increased cooperation in key areas of defence and security, connectivity and trade.

After the talks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India will always stand by Nepal in its quest for all-round growth, asserting that deeper cooperation between the neighbours will strengthen democracy in Nepal.

Oli's three-day visit is in line with the tradition of a Nepalese premier visiting India on his first overseas trip. "We will work together to stop misuse of our open border", he said.

India is believed to be attempting to rebuild its relationship with Oli. We have developed our friendship according to time with a goal to eradicate poverty, improve life standards. Our friendship is historical, renewed, developed and is very fruitful.

Underlining the need to respect friendship, he added, "As friendly neighbours, we respect each other's sensitivities".

Stressing that no country compromised on nationalism, Oli said for Nepal, nationalism was the protection of its sovereignty, territorial integrity, national independence and fulfilment of its national interest.
