Will meet Kim in May or early June, says Trump

US President Donald Trump said Monday that he expects to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in May or early June.

Speaking at the White House on Monday, Mr Trump expressed hope that a deal to get Pyongyang to denuclearise might be made.

Mr Kim's remarks on Monday did not specifically refer to a summit with Mr Trump.

US and North Korean intelligence officials have spoken a few times and even met in a third country, CNN reported.

North Korea has for decades viewed the American military presence in South Korea as part of a "hostile policy" aimed at bringing about its collapse.

Kim Yong-chol, the ex-head of national intelligence for North Korea, was said to be left terrified by how his leader might respond, with the young dictator said to be infamous among his staff for his short temper.

In a growing rapprochement on the Korean peninsula, Kim is scheduled to meet the South's president Moon Jae-in for a rare inter-Korean summit on April 27.

"They've said so. We've said so", Trump said. Before that, Washington had relied mostly on South Korea's assurances of Kim's intentions. He also confirmed direct communication between the United States and the Korean regime.

"Kim Jong Un chose to go to the negotiating table because he judged that once he became a nuclear power", he said, "the USA would be much more interested in talking to him".
