Mr Osborn-Brooks, who was arrested after Vincent's death but later released without charge, has been hailed a hero by some for taking on the burglar and his accomplice, who police are still trying to trace.

Floral tributes to Mr Vincent, understood to be part of the travelling community, were put back up on the fence opposite the home earlier but have already been pulled down.

An angry local campaigner, Iain Gordon, who said he was from the Fair Society group, pulled down the flowers today laid by the family of Vincent.

I don't know what's wrong with these people (who dismantled them)...

One of Osborn-Brooks' neighbours told the paper: "If it was safe for him to return, that shrine would turn his stomach".

The stabbing happened outside a residence in the 100-block of Amanda Avenue in the city's North End around midnight on April 2, police said.

On Tuesday afternoon, his loved ones returned to reattach the mementos opposite the property on South Park Crescent, Hither Green.

An inquest opening at Southwark Coroner's Court heard that Vincent, from Lime Road in Swanley, Kent, was jobless and single at the time.

New Bedford detectives were called to the stabbing, spoke with neighbors, interviewed witnesses and took crime scene photographs, court records say.

One tribute, thought to have been left by the dad-of-four's young daughter, said: 'Strangers can say what they like about you they don't no who you was so I don't care. He had to kill someone, how would you feel. "I think the police made the right decision but the fact they can't protect him isn't right".

The accomplice attempted to carry Vincent to a van after the stabbing at about 1am last Wednesday but gave up and drove off in Hither Green, south-east London.

The shrine - set up after he was stabbed to death by Osborn-Brooks after breaking into his home on April 4 - has now been destroyed three times.

Scotland Yard officers are still hunting 28-year-old Billy Jeeves, who is wanted on suspicion of aggravated burglary in connection with the incident.

His burnt-out Vauxhall Astra van was found on Saturday in St Mary Cray, near Orpington, Kent.

In January, Mr Jeeves and Mr Vincent were named and pictured by Kent Police in connection with an investigation into a distraction burglary on a man in his 70s.
