Teacher at Florida shooting school arrested after leaving gun in toilet
Accused Parkland high school shooter Nikolas Cruz was back in court Wednesday and attorneys tried to figure out if he needs a public defender or if he could afford counsel on his own.
Chemistry teacher Sean Simpson, 43, who was at the Parkland school during the February 14 mass shooting that killed 17, told deputies on Sunday that he forgot the Glock 9 mm in a stall at a restroom at the Deerfield Beach Pier.
Finkelstein also said that if Cruz's inheritance, should he be entitled to it, is paid out in monthly installments, the total funds could amount to a million dollars.
A lawyer for Cruz - who killed 17 people with a semiautomatic weapon at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School - said that any wealth his client receives would go to survivors of the gunman's rampage, the New York Post reported.
Broward Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer has not yet made a determination if Cruz has enough resources to disqualify him from having a public defender.
Scherer did not immediately rule but said she would issue a decision before the next pretrial hearing April 27.

According to ABC New his mother, Lynda Cruz, died November 1 after contracting the flu, leaving an Allstate Life Insurance policy in which Nikolas Cruz possibly stands to collect $25,000.
McNeil confirmed that Cruz now has Microsoft stock worth $2,227, as well as a bank account with $353.
Last month, a grand jury indicted Cruz on 17 counts of premeditated murder in the first degree and 17 counts of attempted murder in the first degree.
Whether Cruz is actually contrite or this is some bid to mitigate his sentence and avoid the death penalty sought by the prosecution is uncertain.
Last month, his defense attorney told a judge that the teen was standing mute to the charges - meaning he was declining to enter a plea.
McNeill told the court that Cruz's mother may have also left an annuity behind, but its worth remains up in the air.
