Mitt Romney's Political Comeback Might Not Be As Easy As He Thought

Romney has President Trump's endorsement, despite being a vocal Trump critic during the 2016 campaign, but it's not clear if that's going to be a two-way street in 2020.

Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has been forced into a primary race after losing Saturday's nomination battle at the state's GOP convention in West Valley City, Utah.

Romney said Saturday he expects to do well in the primary and the general election after coming in a close second to state lawmaker Mike Kennedy at the convention in suburban Salt Lake City.

After a wild and raucous day of voting at the Utah GOP convention, the former MA governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee was unable to win the 60% that he needed to head to the November ballot unopposed. Receiving 49.12 percent of the vote at the end of yesterday's GOP convention, Romney will now compete against Kennedy (who secured 50.88 percent) in a primary set for June 26. Had either candidate received 60% of the vote, they would have clinched the nomination outright.

Kennedy and the ten other candidates Romney faced at the convention questioned the depth of his ties to Utah, and his shifting stance on Trump.

Delegates preferred Kennedy to Romney, 51% to 49% respectively. "Washington, D.C., is the Goliath", Romney said.

"I know there were many people who were not enthusiastic about someone gathering signatures", Romney said.

"Romney previously secured his spot on the primary ballot by gathering 28,000 voter signatures but said Saturday that choice was partly to blame for his loss".

Romney asked for delegates' votes after spending two months on the campaign trail visiting dairy farms, taking selfies with college students and making stump speeches in small towns.

Kennedy promised to "support President Trump" if sent to Washington, but also portrayed himself as an underdog against the "Romney machine". "I'm exhausted of business as usual in Washington, D.C. If you want things to change, you need to vote for change". Right after his 2012 campaign failed, he moved to Utah. Trump fired back that Romney "choked like a dog" during his own White House run.
