Gard's parents fought a five-month legal battle for him to be taken to the United States for experimental treatment.

In an apparent turnaround, the parents of Alfie Evans have asked supporters to vacate the premises of a British hospital where they have been protesting its treatment of the handicapped boy and have stated their intention to "build a bridge" with the institution.

He said: "He's comfortable, content, fighting - the three words I've used all the way through this case".

On Facebook he wrote: "My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings. absolutely heartbroken".

"He ain't showing no sign of suffering or that he needs support or anything".

Piers Morgan has led the tributes to Alfie, whose death came after months of legal battles over the 23-month-old's life support.

"He looks chilled. And that's what's the most important thing right now".

That was done on Monday but the boy is still in hospital -his parents' attempts to take him to Italy for treatment after support from the Pope have also been blocked.

However Mr Evans said: "He's off what people say is "God's replacement".

Alfie's case received much attention outside Britain, especially in Catholic countries.

A court ruled on Tuesday that Alfie was too sick to be taken to hospital at the Vatican and nothing had changed since the previous ruling.

Alfie Evans, who is just under the age of two, remains in Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool after being removed from his ventilator Monday evening.

On Thursday Mr Evans appeared to have reversed his stance, pledging to work with the Alder Hey medical team in Alfie's best interests.

He told Pirate FM: "The response has been outstanding, we've had people from all over Cornwall say they will coem down, we just want as many people to be there as possible to show suppor for Alfie Evans and his family during this hard time".

"If anything it's the utmost reasonable and reliable plan for Alfie right now because he's got nothing else so it is in his best interests definitely".
