Syrian air defenses destroy much of Israeli missiles: army

Iran, meanwhile, in its first official reaction to Israeli attacks on suspected Iranian targets in Syria, said Israel's attacks came "under fabricated and baseless excuses".

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said on Thursday morning that most of Iran's infrastructure in Syria was hit and that he hopes this chapter of "Iranian radicalism" is over.

"We hit almost all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria", said Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah, alongside Russian Federation, have been key backers of the government side in the Syrian civil war.

Analysts also raised questions about the media's blind acceptance of Israel's claim that it was Iranian forces that fired missiles at the occupied Golan Heights, pointing to claims by Syrian officials that it was their own army that fired the missiles in response to Israel's earlier attack.

The message on Twitter Thursday, a day after Israel once again struck targets in Syria believed to house Iranian materiel and personnel, was unusual for an Arab leader in its blunt defense of Israel.

Netanyahu said he presented Israel's perspective on issues, including Iran's secret Amad Project to develop nuclear weapons, which Israel exposed last week, and the current tension surrounding Iran's military presence in Syria, which Israel views as a direct threat to its security.

Netanyahu sees that decision as a "green light to go after Iran in Syria, the consequences be damned", said Heras.

Le Maire said he was seeking concrete exemptions for countries already present in Iran, including Renault, Total, Sanofi, Danone and Peugeot.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group, said Israel's strikes killed at least 23 people, including five Syrian soldiers.

Any confrontation between Iran and Israel is likely to play out first and foremost on the battlefields of Syria, where Iran has built an extensive network of militias during Syria's civil war.

Rouhani did not mention Israel's strikes early on Thursday in Syria, or those against the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, also on Thursday.

Iran, which often acts through proxies in Syria, similarly denied an Israeli claim in February that Tehran sent an armed drone from Syria into Israeli territory, where it was shot down.

The Israelis fear that Iran and its Lebanese guerrilla ally Hezbollah are turning Syria into a new front against them. It blamed the rocket fire on Iran's Quds force, adding that Israel's anti-missile system intercepted four while the rest did not land in its territory.

The Israeli military didn't confirm the strike; it has a policy against commenting on Syrian airstrikes. "We, of course, struck nearly all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria, and they need to remember this arrogance of theirs". This, coupled with Israel and Russian Federation growing closer in recent years, has resulted in Iran no longer enjoying outright backing from Moscow.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned the overnight attacks by Iranian forces and called on Iran to contribute to de-escalation of tensions in the region.
