The announcement comes concurrent with the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, the first standalone Star Wars film to focus on one particular character.

Taking second place this weekend is Fox's Deadpool 2, with an estimated three-day gross of $42.7 million ($53.5 million through Monday). Then Disney goes and pulls something like this.

Even before this weekend, it was considered a tall order for "Solo" to hit $1 billion worldwide the way the last three "Star Wars" films have done in the holiday season.

The movie started out strong with $14.1 million in Thursday previews, a record for Memorial Day weekend.

On the surface, Solo is a decent enough adventure movie with some fun action sequences and a good line in comedy that mostly works.

"Solo" had the lowest opening weekend for a "Star Wars" movie since 2005's "Revenge of the Sith".

Boba Fett's story was continued in prequel movie Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, where it was revealed he inherited his memorable costume and spaceship from Jango Fett, from whom he was cloned.

Instead, Iran is talking with Europe, Russia and China to see if the deal can be kept alive, though that is far from assured. The episode came hours after Trump announced the US would be pulling out of the Obama-era, multination Iran nuclear deal.

Solo was of course beset by high-profile production challenges, including the removal (read: firing) of original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

The weak performance by "Solo" is due more to three big obstacles - opening over Memorial Day weekend, "Star Wars" fatigue, and the movie's lackluster reviews.

"It's the compressed timeframe between the two "Star Wars" films and the highly competitive nature of this marketplace".

Business isn't exactly booming for the galaxy's favorite space smuggler this Memorial Day weekend. Things are looking even bleaker overseas: Hollywood Reporter reports that Solo bricked and debuted at No. 3 in China, earning a weak $10.1 million.

Other rumored anthology films include a Yoda movie and Obi-Wan Kenobi movie.

One the one hand, that's not a huge dent to Solo's opening days in theaters. In a wonderful anecdote, Paul Bettany talked about the ridiculous secrecy on the sets of both Solo and Infinity War!

There's no telling what Solo would have looked like if that director shuffle hadn't happened, or if Howard had been given more time.
