Anti-Kremlin financier Browder briefly detained in Spain

Bill Browder, a prominent financial manager and vocal Vladimir Putin critic, was briefly arrested in Spain on a Russian arrest warrant Wednesday.

Bill Browder has claimed Interpol is "playing with words" after the global police body claimed it had never issued a warrant for his arrest. "Going to the police station right now", Browder said on Twitter, adding that the police would not tell him which station he was being taken to.

The Spanish police service said:...

He posted a police document with the word "fraud" written as the cause for the detention, and then followed it with a photo of himself outside of a police station saying he had been released "after Interpol General Secretary in Lyon advised them not to honour the new Russian Interpol Red Notice".

A Moscow court found Browder guilty in absentia of tax evasion in December and sentenced him to nine years in jail as well as ordering the collection of 4.2 billion rubles ($70 million) in unpaid taxes, state-run Tass reported.

Browder helped push for the pass the Magnitsky Act in 2012 - a bill which freezes the visas and assets of Russians suspected of human rights abuses by the USA government.

"Urgent: Just was arrested by Spanish police in Madrid on a Russian Interpol arrest warrant", he tweeted initially. "They won't tell me which station".

He also posted an image of the warrant and another picture taken in the back of a police vehicle.
