Pakistan fined for slow over-rate during Lords Test

Jos Buttler insisted England could achieve what would be a remarkable victory in the first Test after playing a key role in denying Pakistan a win by an innings at Lord's on Saturday.

Among their batsmen, Asad Shafiq has risen six slots to 26th place after slamming 59 in his only innings of the match, while Harris Sohail has moved up 13 places to 80th rank after scores of 39 and 39 not out. "We have been out-performed in all three departments, we have not batted well enough, first innings in particular". However, International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined the skipper Sarfraz Ahmed 60 percent of his match fee for maintaining the slow over-rate during the Test match.

It says a lot that one of the few bright spots for England was the performance with the bat of a 20-year-old off spinner on Test debut, that is not how things are supposed to work, particularly on home turf.

Root said: "It's easy to look at [this result] and say "Right, we need to make drastic changes".

Sarfraz also paid tribute to the influence of Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur, with the South African having launched his time in charge with a 2-2 series draw in England in 2016.

"Yes, I am very surprised", said Sarfraz.

Yet it was Pakistan, fresh from a trio of county warm-up matches and a five-wicket win over Test debutants Ireland in Dublin, who looked as if they were the home side.

The Aussies came out 4-0 winners, and England's recent run of results seems like a world away from last summer's victories over South Africa and the West Indies.

It's hard to argue that the latest Test match defeat will be something the England squad and fans alike want to forget about and put behind them instantly. But at least they have a glimmer of hope, with Buttler and Bess batting through the evening session after England captain Joe Root's exit for 68 completed a woeful slump that saw four wickets lost for just 19 runs. That was as far as the Durham man got, though, before pushing tentatively at Mohammad Amir and edging to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed.

This is the career-best in Test matches for Hasan, who is now ranked fourth in ODIs after having attained top rank in the format in October previous year.

And on Sunday he fell for a duck when prodding Abbas to Sarfraz.

"With Dom Bess, it was like Joe Root walked back out, with his back foot punches and cover drives", Buttler added.

Amir finished with innings figures of four for 36 and the impressive Abbas had eight in the game after a second-innings haul of four for 41 in 17 overs.
