Amazon, changes to revenue sharing reshape EPL broadcasting

The giant online retailer will show 20 Premier League matches a season for three years, starting from the 2019/20 season.

Inc. bought a package of live broadcasting rights for English Premier League soccer, the first foray by a USA tech giant into a top European championship.

The matches will be available to anyone with an Amazon Prime subscription, which means you shouldn't have to shell out any extra cash to get your Premier League fix.

BT was handed an additional package of live games in the final round at a total cost of £90m, taking its tally of games per season to 52 versus the 128 for Sky.

Add BT Sport to your Sky TV package for £27.99 a month, plus a £20 fee, and Amazon for another £7.99 a month.

If Amazon paid a similar amount as BT for 20 games, the league would generate £4.6 billion (NZ$8.8 billion) from the sale of 200 live games in Britain, compared with £5.14 billion (NZ$9.8 billion) for 168 matches from 2016-19.

The rights package secured by Amazon includes one round of midweek games and one round from a bank holiday - said to be Boxing Day.

"Sky and BT are established Premier League partners and provide first-rate coverage of the competition through their live-match broadcasts and comprehensive programming", said Scudamore.

In addition to live action, there will also be weekly highlights of all Premier League games throughout the season, although it has not been announced when that will be broadcast. "Over these two December fixture rounds Prime members will be able to watch every team, every game, so no matter which Premier League team you support, you're guaranteed to see them play live on Prime Video".

Amazon Prime already broadcasts live sports, such as the US Open tennis and NFL American football.

In Ireland, the League has concluded the sale of 233 live matches per season split into eight packages of rights, the same seven packages of rights as in the United Kingdom and an additional package of 33 Saturday 15:00 matches.

"By coming together and agreeing this change, the clubs have provided a platform for the future success of the league for many years ahead", Scudamore said.

Two of the seven packages of rights available had been left unsold in that last round of deal-making, with the EPL reportedly failing to get its original asking price.

The Premier League is easing into doling out fixtures to streaming video.

The deal is an important milestone for Amazon, but it represents only a fraction of the larger Premier League pie.
