Sean Hannity Tries, And Fails, To Attack Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

A 28-year-old socialist has shaken up NY politics and sent shockwaves through the Democratic Party by defeating 10-term incumbent Joe Crowley in the party's congressional primary.

"Women have a harder time being seen as legitimate", Ocasio-Cortez said, referring specifically to Nixon and NY state attorney general candidate Zephyr Teachout, all progressive candidates who join Ocasio-Cortez's call to abolish ICE.

(Corbin Trent, the co-director of Justice Democrats who also served as Ocasio-Cortez's communications director, spent weeks trying-mostly without success-to interest reporters in the campaign.) But if the movement is going to become a powerful electoral force-as opposed to an every-four-years guilty bystander-its leaders need to start taking seriously, and acting on, the Sanders campaign slogan: "Not Me, Us".

"Working class Americans are ready and willing and eager to hear a message of economic, social, and racial justice", Ocasio-Cortez said.

The race garnered national attention because Crowley is the No. 4 Democrat in the House of Representatives and was considered the likely speaker of the House should the Democrats retake the majority of seats.

Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated Crowley 58 percent to 42 percent, was working at a Brooklyn cocktail bar in November a year ago.

In a congressional district, which includes the Bronx and Queens and is made up of 70 percent people of color, the millennial activist tapped into an issue of representation as she opposed a political star who'd run unchallenged for years.

One of the many new female faces joining USA politics this year, Ms Ocasio-Cortez is a Bronx-born Latina, a community organiser and educator from a working-class background. In unseating the 10-term member of Congress in the first primary election he's faced in more than a decade, Ocasio-Cortez secured a place in history.

And in her victory speech Tuesday, she said her win was "not the end", but a beginning.

Crowley blew off two debates with Ocasio-Cortez, earning him a scathing critique in the New York Times. Ocasio-Cortez is being celebrated far and wide.

"The fact that in a very progressive district in NY it went more progressive than ... well, Joe Crowley is a progressive, but she's more left than Joe Crowley, is about that district".
