Rouhani Warns U.S. of ‘Consequences’ for Push Against Iran Oil

The U.S.is expected to put pressure on allies and other countries in the coming months to divest from Iranian oil exports by November 4, a senior State Department official said last week. If European allies don't join, Trump has threatened secondary sanctions on any company that does business with Tehran.

The bigger problem is that, the more successful the United States is at cutting off Iran's oil exports, the harder it will be to ensure plentiful supplies of cheap and affordable oil right when global demand is at its strongest level of the year.

"At the current historical juncture, the new USA rulers consider themselves as being superior not only to Iran, but also to our entire region, Muslims and, essentially, all non-Americans", Rouhani said. "There's going to be enormous amount of pressure brought to bear on US allies to comply".

"The Americans claim that they want to completely stop Iran's oil exports but they don't understand the meaning of this sentence because it's meaningless that Iran's oil can not be exported, while region's oil is", the Iranian president was quoted as saying by his official website.

The NCRI is led by Iranian exile group Mujahedin-e Khalq, which advocates the "overthrow" of "religious dictatorship" in Iran, and accused the Iranian government of coordinating the attack.

Dozens of European companies have already dropped plans for investment in Iran, including the French oil giant Total.

Mr Hook said that the first part of U.S. sanctions against Iran will snap back on August 6.

The biggest buyer of Iranian oil is China, which is likely to resist the U.S. sanctions as well.

On Monday, he said Iran expects European nations to come up with a package to save the deal in the "coming days".

Iran had been pushing hard for oil producers to hold output steady as US sanctions are expected to hit its exports.

They said the Iranian diplomat in Vienna was believed to be a contact of the couple.

Austria on Sunday took over the European Union's six-month rotating presidency, while Switzerland represents United States interests in Iran owing to the absence of diplomatic relations between Washington and Tehran.

The Iranian president says few countries support Washington's schemes to isolate Iran.

It is unclear what Rouhani meant by the comment, which came as he met with Iranian nationals living in Switzerland.

"After the JCPOA [nuclear deal] we showed very clearly that whatever promise we make, we stand by", Rouhani said.

Now, Washington is stepping up pressure on all countries, including India and China, to completely stop buying oil from Iran by November 4.

Meanwhile, a major focus of Trump's campaign is to drive Tehran's economy-sustaining oil exports to zero.

Iran, the third-largest producer in the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, exports about 2 million barrels of crude oil per day. "They claim that they want to put pressure on the Iranian government, but when they apply sanctions on people's basic needs like medicine, who will be put under pressure?"

Trump subsequently expressed concern about oil prices last week, announcing in a tweet that he and King Salman of Saudi Arabia had agreed to raise daily oil production by 2 million barrels.

Brian Hook, the State Department's director of policy planning, tamped down concerns even further Tuesday when he told reporters the Administration will consider requests for waivers from economic sanctions but stopped short of committing to any relief.

"Our goal is to increase pressure on the Iranian regime by reducing to zero its revenue on crude oil sales", Hook said.
