Los Angeles police confirmed in a news release on Monday that Mr Atkins had shot his grandmother and injured another woman before fleeing. The pursuit ended with the vehicle crashing into a light post outside the Trader Joe's in the Silver Lake neighborhood. "The suspect was located via LoJack and a pursuit ensued at which point the suspect fired multiple rounds at pursuing officers", the LAPD tweeted in a thread after the incident concluded.

The vehicle was wrapped around a pole and police rescued a woman left inside, according to reports.

The suspect walked out of the Trader Joe's in the city's Silver Lake neighbourhood with a cluster of hostages Saturday afternoon (Sunday NZT) and was immediately surrounded by officers.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said a 20-year-old female patient has been transferred to a hospital in fair condition. SWAT teams are also on the scene.

"Our hostage negotiators believed they had established a good rapport with him", the chief said.

Customers ran out of the store when the armed man burst in. Meanwhile, family members, co-workers and customers continued to grieve for a Trader Joe's store manager who was killed in a shootout at the store. Originally 40 to 50 others were inside the store.

The Los Angeles Police Department said Mr Atkins asked for handcuffs to handcuff himself before he eventually surrendered.
