Chandra Grahan or Lunar Eclipse 2018: Date, Time in India, significance

The longest "blood moon" this century will be closely tracked by Mars through the sky in a double celestial treat of a kind that will not be repeated for decades.

The world is set to witness the century's longest lunar eclipse that will turn the moon blood red.

The areas of our planet from which this can be experienced are very limited, because the total lunar eclipse must be ongoing at the time of moonset/sunrise.

Only light that is refracted through Earth's atmosphere manages to reach the moon, with everything outside of the red wavelengths being scattered, leaving the moon looking blood red.

Also, timeanddate.com reported on all eclipses worldwide from 1900 to 2100.

The interesting fact is that in India, the eclipse, both partial and the total, will be visible in nearly all the parts of the country.

"Since the moon is bright anyway, you'll be able to see it regardless of light pollution, but to see the planets Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars nearly in line with the moon, you'll want a nice dark spot where light from the city or streets does not pollute the sky too much", Knowles said.

Mars will appear brighter in the sky than the moon, separated by just five degrees - about the width of three fingers held at arm's length.

St Helens Star

Our neighbouring planet will appear unusually large and bright, a mere 57.7 million kilometres (35.9 million miles) from Earth on its elliptical orbit around the sun. Mars is also safe to view with the naked eye. Astronomers often talk about these events, characterized by two celestial bodies appearing very close together in the sky.

The site also has interactive maps that show which regions will see a partial or total eclipse. The greatest eclipse occurs at 9:22 pm CET (12:52 am IST). At 1 hour 43 minutes of totality, the lunar eclipse will be the longest until the year 2123. Unlike a solar eclipse which is only visible from a particular spot at the right time, a lunar eclipse can be seen from everywhere in Australia and without special instruments - weather permitting.

Today's event would be followed tomorrow morning by another rare happening - an eclipsed moon that could be visible on one horizon while the Sun rose on the other.

"Hence the appellation of "Blood Moon". "Earth blocks all light coming from sun towards moon".

Fearing the jaguar would come down to earth to continue its assault, people would throw spears at the moon and create noise to scare it away.

Lunar eclipses often throw up interesting data for astronomers.

And do not forget to try and catch the event as soon as you can because the moon will only be in a state of total eclipse until 11.15 pm when it will start to emerge and regain its normal appearance.
