A public health alert has been issued by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) warning consumers not consume certain pre-packaged salads and wraps from major retailers, including Walgreens, Kroger and Trader Joe's, over concerns about possible parasite contamination. Indianapolis-based distributor Caito Foods LLC reported that officials with Fresh Express had issued a recall notice for chopped romaine that was used in the wraps and salads.

The potentially affected items were produced between July 15-18, with a "best by", "enjoy by", "best if sold by" or "sell by" date ranging from July 18-23, according to the FSIS.

In a statement, Trader Joe's said no illnesses have been reported in connection with its products, and specified that they were sold only in Midwest stores.

The FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers' refrigerators and that consumers may be at risk due to the length of the Cyclospora incubation period, according to the agency.

The FDA is advising these products to be thrown away or returned to where they were purchased out of precaution. The parasite causes intestinal illness.

Cyclospora is a one-celled organism that can wreak havoc on the human body's digestive system, causing explosive diarrhea, nausea and fatigue.

News of the recall comes after a cyclospora infection outbreak that began in May and was linked to McDonald's salads supplied by Fresh Express.

At least 286 people were sickened and 11 were hospitalized as a result of the May outbreak.
