While a U.S. federal judge stopped a Texas based website called "Defense Distributed" from formally releasing the blueprints, it turns out some of the plans were posted online to the world anyway.

A federal judge in Seattle issued a restraining order, which temporarily stopped the release of blueprints to make 3D-printed plastic guns.

3D printers have become much more accessible and that's made it easier to make these guns.

Gun control advocates say downloadable guns undermine laws that block unsafe people from accessing firearms.

The lawsuit was filed by Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson and joined by Attorneys General from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Although the Austin-based company said it would start allowing downloads on Wednesday, the blueprints for at least one gun have been posted on its website since Friday.

He said the plastic won't hold up to more than a couple of bullets, plus they still require some small metal parts.

In 2015, Defense Distributed was told to take down the plans due to the violation and national security concerns and the company sued invoking the First Amendment. That decision followed a four-year legal battle between the government and Defense Distributed owner Cody Wilson, along with gun-rights activist group The Second Amendment Foundation, over the plans.

"We should be doing everything we can to make it more hard for criminals, children, and individuals with serious mental illness to possess a gun".

The Trump administration previously ruled to allow Wilson and Defense Distributed to publish the blueprints.

President Donald Trump has questioned whether his administration should have agreed to allow the plans to be posted online.

"These downloadable firearms were just about to be widely available online", Shapiro said on Twitter.

The second measure is meant to ensure that even guns primarily made of plastic can be discovered by metal detectors.

The Seattle federal judge scheduled a follow-up hearing on the issue for August 10.

"All you need is a little money and you can download a blueprint from the Internet to make a gun at home, " said Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer.

Ferguson released a statement praising Seattle US District Judge Robert Lasnik for his ruling.

The blueprints for 3D printed guns have been available online for years now, mostly in the deep recesses of the dark web.

The Firearms Policy Coalition and other groups pulled the plans off the website of pro-gun group Defense Distributed before the court order and are now sharing those same files on a new site, said Craig DeLuz, a spokesman for the group.
