Nick Foles to start Eagles' opener vs. Falcons

Despite Doug Pederson not being happy the news leaked ahead of time, the Philadelphia Eagles went ahead and announced on Monday that Nick Foles would start at quarterback Week 1.

Nick Foles has officially been named the Eagles' starter for Week 1.

Even more exciting, Clement is expected to take on a much larger role in the backfield this season teaming up with Jay Ajayi and Darren Sproles since LeGarrette Blount is no longer in the picture.

Foles started the Eagles' last game that counted too.

Pederson did allow that Wentz, recovering from surgery to fix his ACL and LCL in his left knee, still has not been cleared for contact.

Last week, Pederson announced he would make his decision on September 31, the day after their final preseason game, but would not tell anyone except his team until he would be forced to reveal it the day of the game.

Foles led the Eagles to their first Super Bowl championship in February and earned Super Bowl MVP honors along the way.

Two reports over the weekend made him change his thinking.

Wentz, the former No. 2 pick out of North Dakota State, has looked increasingly like his old self in recent weeks.

Pederson did say Wentz had not yet been cleared to participate in contact drills.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport broke the news that Foles would start Thursday against the Falcons, but the Eagles declined to confirm that report.

On Sunday, Pederson lashed out at the media, saying they put words in his mouth, and was very tight-lipped on if Foles or Carson Wentz would be calling the shots come opening night.

The last time Wentz spoke, he said: "I felt good".

Foles gets the nod because Carson Wentz has yet to be cleared for a full return to football activities. I think you guys saw it all camp.
