It is now forecast to become a Category 1 hurricane before making landfall near Biloxi, MS, late Tuesday. The National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane watch through Tuesday night, particularly in coastal areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Meteorologist Danielle Niles of CBS' Boston station WBZ says the threat along the Gulf Coast means heavy rain as well as storm surge. It is incredibly unlikely we will feel winds that strong here in Kentuckiana.

"Gordon will not be just a coastal event, and not just wind but also water could be damaging, risky and even deadly, especially if preparations are not rushed to completion as early as possible today before tropical storm conditions arrive", said Rick Knabb, The Weather Channel's tropical weather expert. As of the 8pm update winds are sustained around 60 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center said at 8 p.m. ET that the storm was centered 95 miles west of Fort Myers, Florida.

Gordon strengthened rapidly overnight, and it was expected to hit the central Gulf of Mexico sometime late Tuesday. Tropical Storm Warnings still remain in effect for the Louisiana and Florida coastlines.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency warned of storm surges of between 3 and 5 feet (1 and 1.5 meters) and told South Mississippi residents to be prepared to evacuate. We got out of it barely alive."Jeff Collier, mayor of Dauphin Island, Alabama, in the Gulf, said the storm was approaching just as the island was finishing up recovery from Hurricane Nate past year."We've just about got things cleaned up", Collier told WPMI". The Hurricane Center said isolated amounts could reach a foot, and that areas of flash flooding were expected between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Flooding was also a high risk for the areas affected by the storm, including portions of southeast Louisiana north of Interstate 10 and southwest MS west of Interstate 55.

September is the peak of hurricane season, and the National Hurricane Center is also watching Tropical Storm Florence, which is about 895 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands with 60 mph winds.

Skies quickly turned from partly cloudy to dark gray as storms spread over the port city of Mobile in the evening.

The storm's predicted track had shifted slightly east as of Monday evening, meaning Louisiana is now just outside the area under the hurricane warning.
