The 10pm advisory from the National Hurricane Center officially marked the landfall of Tropical Storm Gordon just west of the Alabama / Mississippi State line Tuesday.

The rainfall will cause flash flooding across portions of these areas.

Gordon's top sustained winds were down to 40 mph as its tight core moved about 20 miles northwest of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

In addition to heavy rains, the Miami-based forecasting center said there is a possibility of tornadoes in MS and western Alabama, where crews have been working throughout the night to restore lost power to more than 20,000 customers, mostly in coastal areas.

"Most areas over there in the western Florida Panhandle from Pensacola eastward have received 5-8 inches just since the start [Tuesday] evening, and it's still raining", says Jack Cullen, a forecaster at the National Weather Service in Mobile. Rainfall could be even more intense in isolated places, with up to 12in expected by early on Saturday. Tropical storm warnings have been issued from west of the mouth of the Pearl River in MS to east of Grand Isle, Louisiana.

"I'm asking all residents to do their part in getting ready for this storm", New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said in a statement.

U.S. oil producer Anadarko Petroleum Corp evacuated workers and shut production at two offshore platforms on Monday, and other companies with production and refining operations along the Gulf Coast said they were securing facilities.
