Trump Says U.S. Attendance Uncertain at Saudi Investment Meeting

Saudi Arabia has promised that no one will be exempt from the enquiry into the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday.

"Just spoke with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia who tally denied any knowledge of what took place in their Turkish Consulate", Trump tweeted this afternoon.

That leaves Trump, who Monday suggested it might have been "rogue killers" behind Khashoggi's murder, out of step with even close allies in Washington like U.S. Sen.

"I hope you are comfortable here", the king told Pompeo, according to the reporters.

The US president, Donald Trump, on Tuesday defended Saudi Arabia in the face of mounting allegations that Riyadh was involved in the Saudi journalist's alleged killing.

The top U.S. diplomat on Wednesday refused to blame Riyadh, saying he did not want "to talk about any of the facts" - a day after President Trump said the kingdom must be presumed to be innocent.

He reiterated US concern over Khashoggi's disappearance, Nauert said, adding that both foreign ministers had "agreed on the importance of a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation". However, they have not presented any evidence to corroborate their claim and say that video cameras at the consulate were not recording at the time.

A strongly pro-government Turkish newspaper has published a gruesome recounting of the alleged slaying of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Turkish officials said that a Saudi hit squad killed Mr. Khashoggi and dismembered his body to smuggle it out of the country.

Pompeo "also thanked the King for his commitment to supporting a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation of Khashoggi's disappearance", the statement read.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told the state-run Anadolu Agency on Wednesday that Saudi Arabia has "accepted" a request for a search of the official residence but had not yet given its final consent.

Turkish forensic teams earlier this week searched the consulate building where Khashoggi was last seen entering two weeks ago. According to Trump, Salman told him he knew nothing about what happened at the consulate in Istanbul, where Khashoggi went missing on October 2.

Middle East Eye reported that Khashoggi was "dragged from the consul-general's office at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and onto the table of his study next door".

Worldwide leaders and business executives are severing or rethinking ties to the Saudi government after Khashoggi's high-profile disappearance. Yet he has also repeatedly said that any potential USA sanctions should not include killing a multi-billion dollar arms deal with the Saudis.

On Monday, CNN cited two sources as saying the Saudis are preparing a report that Mr Khashoggi's death resulted from a botched interrogation, while The Wall Street Journal said the kingdom was weighing whether to say that rogue operatives killed Mr Khashoggi by mistake. The kingdom also denied an assertion by France that it held Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri captive in November 2017.
