"We're going to demand that those responsible are held accountable and once we have all the facts President Trump will make the decision based upon the values of the American people and our vital national interests", he said.

The official said Kushner - like other members of the administration, including Trump - believes Saudi Arabia should suffer some sort of outcome, but said Kushner also believes the U.S. -Saudi relationship "shouldn't be blown up" because of the Khashoggi matter.

Pence, who spoke in Washington at an event hosted by The Washington Post, said whatever US response the president decides to make will keep in mind the importance of USA relations with Saudi Arabia - an alliance that he noted has been in existence since shortly after World War II.

But Western diplomats say they assume Erdogan knows more than he revealed Tuesday and by withholding what he knows, he's increasing his leverage on Riyadh and turning the screws on the Saudi royal family. Earlier, Turkey's foreign minister said it would cooperate with any worldwide or United Nations probe into the killing, a nod to transparency that only seemed to accentuate an emerging pariah status for Saudi Arabia.

Mr Erdogan gave no specific details on how 59-year-old Mr Khashoggi was killed. After his disappearance, the officials abruptly returned to Saudi Arabia.

The man replied, "I never saw any bombs or bombers, but I'm a Turkish nationalist - to me, all Syrians are terrorists". The judge at Brunson's latest hearing sentenced him to time served and subsequently released him, Fox News reports .

He said a team of Saudi agents arrived in Turkey on October 1, the day before Khashoggi's death, and some visited the woods around Istanbul; that area has been searched for the journalist's body, which has yet to be found.

It came as video was published showing a meeting between the journalist's son, Salah Khashoggi, the Gulf kingdom's ruler, King Salman, and his son crown prince Mohamed bin Salman, at the Yamama Palace in Riyadh on Tuesday. "The biggest threat to the crown prince is what he did", says Khalil Jahshan, a friend of the slain journalist and director of the Arab Center, research group in Washington, DC.

The comments come as the Liberal government is facing new pressure to cancel the deal amid worldwide outrage over the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi earlier this month.

In the past weeks, Turkish media and officials speaking to global media have claimed that audio recordings prove Khashoggi was tortured before being decapitated although no concrete evidence of their existence have emerged.

That leaves open questions such as whether the Saudi operation in Istanbul was always meant to result in Khashoggi's death or whether the original plan was to kidnap and transport him to Saudi Arabia.

Jubeir also said the Saudis did not know where Khashoggi's body was, though one of the Saudi officials had told Reuters it was wrapped up in a rug, taken out of the consulate in a vehicle and handed over to a "local cooperator" for disposal. The Saudi government insists the King and Crown Prince had no prior knowledge of the plan to kill Khashoggi.

Erdogan said Khashoggi was the victim of a "brutal" and "planned" murder and called for the extradition of 18 suspects to Turkey to face justice. In a remark clearly pointed by omitting any mention of MBS, he said, "I do not doubt the sincerity of King Salman".
