Trump ridiculed over advice to 'rake forest floors'

Mr Trump has blamed the fires on forest mismanagement, and while visiting California over the weekend, the US President added an eyebrow-raising solution to the mix.

He said: "You've got to take care of the floors".

CNN reported Saturday that Trump toured properties in Paradise, the community of 27,000 that was almost completely destroyed in the fire, before answering questions from reporters alongside Paradise Mayor Jody Jones, FEMA Administrator Brock Long, California Governor Jerry Brown, and Lieutenant Governor and Governor-elect Gavin Newsom.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto later disputed this.

Reversing course on his threat to cut the state's federal funding if Californians don't solve their forest fire problem, President Donald Trump now says he'll solve it with them. And when it is, it's a very small problem. "We're going to have safe forests".

Volunteers across the state are sifting through the burned wreckage of houses looking for remains and Mr Trump suggested raking as a form of management to stop fires of that scale happening again. And asked if seeing the devastation changed his mind on climate change, Trump said: "No. No".

Judging by the reaction from actual Finnish people who actually live in Finland, nobody has any clue what the hell The Donald is talking about when he says the Finnish rake their forests!

Meanwhile Mr Yrjo Niskanen, head of emergency preparedness at Finland's national forest centre, said the USA president may have been referring to the practice of removing branches and loose material left in the forest after logging.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea pleaded with fire evacuees to check the list of people reported as unreachable by family and friends and to call in if they are safe. "And they're raking ... little bushes, that you could see are totally dry, weeds".

He was condemned for blaming officials working to prevent more loss of life and mocked for comparing arid California with a Nordic country where melting snow causes springtime floods. "You wouldn't have the fire".

Ah yes, raking leaves!

Raking is an effective way to clear light debris like leaves and pine needles away from residences, she said.

One Finnish woman posted a photo pretending to vaccuum the forest floor. "But the reality is, to manage every little bit of fuel with a rake is not practical".

The president doubled down on his previous comments about forest management on Friday, just one day before flying to California, in an interview with Fox News' Chris Wallace.
