Hoover police said a fight broke out between two teenagers inside the mall near the Footaction store and resulted in an exchange of gunfire, WTVM reported. As the gunman tried to flee the scene, the guard, who was an off-duty cop, shot and killed him. The mall remained closed for the rest of the night, but reopened early in the morning for Black Friday shopping, according to CNN.
