Dutch PM rules out Brexit rejig if May loses

With opposition parties and dozens of the prime minister's fellow Conservatives against the deal, May's chances of winning the vote in Parliament appear slim. His resignation came after May said Britain was abandoning efforts to retain full access to the EU's Galileo satellite navigation system after Brexit.

Ministers insist they can persuade enough of them to change their mind because, they claim, the alternative is a no-deal Brexit or "no Brexit at all".

MPs say this will not not respect a binding Commons vote last month, which required the government to lay before Parliament "any legal advice in full".

The government says that if May's deal is voted down there is a risk Britain will exit the European Union with no agreement at all, with serious potential economic consequences.

"The question now is whether Theresa May can win the "meaningful vote".

"Because, but for the Fixed Term Parliaments Act, the convention was always if a government loses what's called a confidence vote - something of such significance - then that government has to go".

"This vote is taking place, as planned, and many MPs are considering how they may or may not vote".

Speaking to host Philip Schofield on a slot which followed the last minute cancellation of another slot last week with the same interviewer, the prime minister said - despite heavy criticism and likening it to a political surrender to Brussels - that she would achieve a deal which reflected the will of the British people as expressed in the 2016 referendum.

But while the letter indicates that Pelosi has a math problem, there are already signs she may be able to overcome the opposition. She has more recently become a punching bag for Republicans, despite having a record of bipartisan legislative achievement.

But while he accepted the deal was not "perfect", he said the alternative was either "no deal or no Brexit". People voted to leave.

He added: "There is a real risk if we don't vote for this deal there may be a majority in the House of Commons for a second referendum".

"Obviously, it'll depend on what actually happens in nine days".

Under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011, the government in theory has a five-year term, but a vote of no confidence or a vote by two thirds of the Commons can still trigger a general election at any time, making it exceedingly hard for the government of the day to stave off an election should lawmakers wish to go to the voters.

The Prime Minister, who has been attending the G20 summit in Buenos Aires this weekend, has repeatedly declined to comment on suggestions she might try to call a general election.

She got a vote of confidence Saturday from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who praised May's "leadership" in sealing the Brexit agreement.

◙ A YouGov poll released today by the People's Vote campaign, which is calling for a fresh referendum on the terms of Britain's exit from the European Union, found support for remaining in the bloc stood at 55 per cent - the highest result found by the polling group since the original vote in 2016.
