Ruth Bader Ginsburg has pulmonary lobectomy: What to know about the procedure

The surgery Friday - a pulmonary lobectomy - was conducted by thoracic surgeon Valerie Rusch, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NY.

Although Ginsburg isn't expected to need "further treatment", Twitter users are already offering her their own lungs because they're so desperate for her to keep a balance in the nation's highest court. She had two malignant growths removed from her left lung.

Ginsburg was nominated to the Supreme Court by then President Bill Clinton, taking the oath of office in early 1993.

'According to the thoracic surgeon, Valerie W. Rusch, MD, FACS, both nodules removed during surgery were found to be malignant on initial pathology evaluation, ' the court statement said. No additional treatment is now planned.

There is no standardized process for Supreme Court justices to make disclosures as to their health, and the justices themselves are sometimes imprecise about their ailments or overall well-being.

The nodules were discovered while Ginsburg, 85, was being evaluated and treated for a rib fracture due to a fall last month.

Dr. Douglas Mathisen, chairman of thoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, said that recovery from such an operation typically ranges from two to four days in the hospital, with the patient able to go home, do desk work and make calls within a week. As Ginsburg does not have a history of smoking, he said a lung cancer diagnosis was unlikely. In 2014, doctors placed a stent in her right coronary artery to improve blood flow after she reported discomfort following routine exercise. Ginsburg had her lower left lobe removed. Doesn't look like she'll miss a day because of this one, either.

The "Notorious RBG" meme, a play on the late rapper Notorious B.I.G., was created as a response to a 2013 dissent Ginsburg wrote when the court majority issued a milestone decision rolling back voting-rights protections. In 2009, she was sent to the hospital following a bad reaction to medicine. She said at the time that she was not considering retirement, and said there should not be term limits for Supreme Court Justices.
