UVA shuts out SC to win Belk Bowl

This win snapped their three-game Bowl losing streak. Fortunately for them, they have other good skill players.

Bronco Mendenhall and Virginia both snapped bowl losing streaks and capped off a breakthrough season with a resounding win, shutting out SC 28-0 in the Belk Bowl. Zaccheus is the school's career record holder for receptions and second all-time in receiving yards, and he provided the explosive spark that a plodding Wahoos offense needed to pull away from the Gamecocks.

SC fell to 9-14 all-time in Bowl games. But it was the Gamecocks who ate crow.

Virginia's shutout victory marked the first time since 2006 that SC has been held scoreless.

South Carolina's highly-touted offense finally came alive late in the third quarter with a 23-yard and 37-yard pass from Bentley.

Virginia dominated the time of possession 42:35 to 17:25.

"Watch some college football bowls games", said fellow student John Minor. MI and Florida have played way too many times in recent years, so this game - a matchup of the SEC's third-best pass offense and the ACC's second-best pass defense - will be a nice alternative before the Cotton Bowl later that afternoon. At first, Muschamp simply said he didn't know why Fenton didn't play, adding, "He was out the second half". The Gamecocks didn't accomplish anything on their checklist.

Virginia redshirt junior QB Bryce Perkins completed 14-of-29 passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns while running for 112 yards in a 34-31 overtime loss to Virginia Tech.

It was Virginia's first bowl win since 2005 and first win over an SEC opponent since it downed SC in Charlottesville in 2002. The last two were overtime decisions. SC had some impressive wins against Vanderbilt, Missouri, and Ole Miss, however, couldn't notch a signature win this season as they went 0-5 against top-25 opponents this season.

SC has made a habit of second half bowl comebacks, but there was none of that Saturday.

Mulvaney: 'Very possible' shutdown goes into 2019
He predicted it could extend into January, when Democrats will assume control of the House based on their midterm election gains. Trump reversed course Thursday and rejected a measure that had unanimously passed the Senate and was under House consideration.

The Cavaliers had plenty left and it showed from wire-to-wire.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, the Gamecocks would finally get some life when Virginia wide receiver Hasise Dubois fumbled and SC recovered. "They did what they had to do to beat us; hats off to them". I'll get grief for crying, but I've been through a lot here.

Virginia's defense was short-handed with Faumui's absence, causing the Cavaliers to go with what he called "a two-down" the majority of the game, meaning two down linemen, "and that gave us a two-deep", he chuckled.

"I think the guys have responded really well not having him out there at practice", Bentley said.

South Carolina's woes continued as sophomore placekicker Parker White's 45-yard field goal try went wide right eight seconds into the second quarter. "Unless the long break after the end of the regular season has slowed the Gamecocks offense, that should be enough to carry them to a close win".

"Just very thankful", Dungey said, talking through tears. Each player and head coach Bronco Mendenhall got to take a few laps around the track with a professional driver, and some of them were shocked with feeling of 200 miles per hour. "They played exactly as they prepared".

This game will be a clash of styles with Virginia's spread offense and stellar quarterback Bryce Perkins against that Will Muschamp-coached defense of SC.

"That was buried the minute we came back and got to work in January", Mendenhall said. "I gave him a chance and he made a great play for me, broke a tackle and dove into the end zone for the victor". "A bowl victory is significant, especially when you put it in contrast to a year ago, you can't be more striking in this setting". The Cavaliers were picked to finish last in the ACC Coastal this season, but they found a way to win seven games this season.

"I couldn't have asked for anything better", Virginia alum Ashley Shults said. "We're not done. This is the first step".
