Talks in Switzerland would follow a meeting due to start in Beijing today between United States and Chinese officials, the first formal gathering between the two sides since Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) on December 1 agreed to a 90-day tariff truce, following a widely anticipated dinner at the G20 meeting in Buenos Aires.

Monday's events also came as China and the USA began talks in an attempt to settle a trade war that has cost both countries billions of dollars.

Trump imposed tariff increases of up to 25 percent on $250 billion of Chinese imports over complaints Beijing steals or pressures companies to hand over technology.

The United States and China are likely to reach a good settlement over immediate trade issues, said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, as the two countries open talks on settling a damaging trade war.

Trump said the USA tariffs had hurt China.

But US President Donald Trump on Friday said: "I think we will make a deal with China". There are concerns that US growth, 3.4 percent in the third quarter, could also be slowing even as the country's unemployment rate remains almost at a five-decade low.

The Beijing talks follow small signs of progress - and the absence of new threats from Trump - while the two sides work to ease trade tensions by March 1.

"The Chinese side immediately sent military vessels and aircraft to conduct verification and identification on the US ship and warned it to leave", Lu told the briefing.

Asked about Mr Trump's comments, Mr Lu said the Chinese economy has adequate "resilience and potential", adding: "We have full confidence in the long-term sound fundamentals of the Chinese economy".

The negotiations are to address issues including intellectual property, agriculture and industrial purchases, two people familiar with the preparations said.

These two nations had been locked in a tariff war for much of the 2018, inflicting agonizing wounds and disrupting the flow of hundreds of billions of dollars, while both of the countries had suffered bad, alongside the global economy.
