Here's how the Oscars made history with today's nominations

Will "A Star Is Born" rebound from a thumping at the Golden Globes?

The nominations for the 91st Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday.

This is hardly a shock, but Coogler was definitely seen as a wild card in the often unpredictable Best Director race.

Out of Roma's whopping 10 nominations, none is more surprising than Marina de Tavira's inclusion in the best supporting actress category.

Also nominated for best picture are A Star Is Born, Green Book, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Vice and Black Panther - which becomes the first superhero film to be shortlisted in the category.

One of the most buzzed-about films is "Roma" from Alfonso Cuaron - a black and white ode to his childhood in 1970s Mexico City that took home two Golden Globes, including best director.

The Motion Picture Cast Recording from A Star Is Born spent two weeks at Number 1 on the UK's Official Albums Chart and spawned the chart-topping single Shallow.

The Oscars will be broadcast live from Los Angeles's Dolby Theater on February 24 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Broncos name Rich Scangarello as offensive coordinator
He has previous experience as an offensive coordinator in the college ranks at Wagner, Northern Arizona and Millsaps. It's been a huge challenge for both of them, having to catch up in the time of year that he was brought in.

Rahaf al-Qunun: UNHCR 'grateful' Saudi woman not deported
Alqunun described a life of unrelenting abuse at the hands of her family, who live in the city of Hail, in northern Saudi Arabia . Saudi Arabia's human rights record has been under heavy scrutiny since the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi previous year .

Screenwriter Tony McNamara was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for The Favourite, while Fiona Crombie was nominated for Best Production Design on the same movie, which also received a nod for Best Picture.

You Were Never Really Here, Can You Ever Forgive Me? Kathryn Bigelow remains the first and only woman to win the best director's award, for The Hurt Locker in 2010. The film and co-star Steve Carell had been heavily ignored throughout awards season, but Chalamet was being nominated relatively consistently up until this point. Peele, McKittrick and Blum were nominated in the same category for "Get Out" a year ago, and Peele went on to win in the original screenplay category.

This is very exciting, but the other six nominations are also very exciting.

Some Oscar regulars were honored again.

At the age of 72, Paul Schrader - writer of such cinematic landmarks as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull - belatedly gets a nomination for his First Reformed screenplay. What's even more impressive is the fact that the film is the rare case of a major blockbuster that earned more domestically ($700 million) than it did internationally ($646 million), and is one of the only Marvel solo superhero franchises to hit the billion-dollar mark.

Black Panther is up for best picture at this year's Oscars awards. Still, "A Star Is Born" was the sole film to land top nominations from virtually every guild group.

Black Panther was the biggest movie of 2018. Blunt was forced to remain silent for most of the movie.

Last year's It Boy missed out on his second nomination in a row for his performance as a drug addict. Though ratings for award shows have generally been dropping, the downturn prompted the academy to revamp this year's telecast. Despite this recognition for the film, there was no Academy love for John David in the Lead Actor category.
