Mueller probe 'close to being completed': acting U.S. attorney general

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker says the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation is "close to being completed".

"The investigation is, I think, close to being completed, and I hope that we can get the report from Director Mueller as soon as possible", Whitaker said during a news conference at Justice Department headquarters.

CNN reports that Whitaker has been "fully briefed" on Mueller's investigation and that he anticipates a swift end to the probe.

The timing of Mueller's investigation had been a matter of intense speculation since months after it began in May 2017. Some of those conversations included "general discussion of the Special Counsel's investigation in which I gave my views on such matters as Bob Mueller's high integrity and various media reports".

Mueller's investigation has consistently delivered results since it was launched when the special counsel was appointed in May 2017.

Trump's nominee to fill the attorney general post permanently, William Barr, recently pledged to make public as much of the report as possible, saying Mueller is required to file it confidentially. "But the statements I made were as a private citizen with only publicly available information".

Mueller has obtained guilty pleas from or indicted several Trump associates, including Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen and Michael Flynn. Trump has repeatedly said he was not involved in any collusion with Russian Federation and has often referred to the probe as a "witch hunt".

Though most defendants facing charges tend to stay quiet for fear of inflaming prosecutors or a judge, Stone has opted for a different tack since his pre-dawn arrest on Friday. They also come just days after Mueller's office unveiled an indictment of Roger Stone, a longtime friend of Trump.

Barr, who served previously as attorney general in President George H.W. Bush's administration, appeared headed for confirmation in the Republican-controlled Senate.

Others speculated that Mueller could be planning follow-up investigations, to "prove" that there was White House interference in the original probe.
