The start date for Michael Cohen's three-year prison stay has been delayed for two months, after President Trump's former personal attorney asked for more time to recuperate from surgery.

In response to Trump's tweet, Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger said in a statement that "there are mounting signs that [Trump's] incendiary rhetoric is encouraging threats and violence against journalists at home and overseas".

"Mr. Gaetz and Mr. Jordan began huddling with like-minded Republicans, sometimes including Representative Mark Meadows, a press-savvy North Carolinian close to Mr. Trump, and Representative Devin Nunes of California, the head of the House Intelligence Committee", the Times reported, identifying this period as the time when "the president's fiercest allies in Congress and the conservative media were busy trying to flip the script on the federal law enforcement agencies and officials who began the inquiry into Mr. Trump's campaign".

Cohen was sentenced in December to three years in prison for various financial crimes.

Cohen's lawyers asked for a 60-day extension in a letter to U.S. District Court Judge William Pauley to allow Cohen to undergo "intensive post-surgical physical therapy" and to prepare for testimony before three congressional committees. He will now report to prison on May 6.

"I am pleased to announce that Michael Cohen's public testimony before the Oversight Committee is back on, despite efforts by some to intimidate his family members and prevent him from appearing", Rep Elijah Cummings, D-Md., said in a statement.

"Despite @RealDonaldTrump attacks against his family, Mr. Cohen will not be deterred, will speak about his decade long experiences working for Mr. Trump, his own mistakes and decision to put family and country first", Cohen lawyer Lanny Davis tweeted after the rescheduled hearing was announced. He acknowledged lying about his role in a Trump business proposal in Moscow and paying two women who alleged affairs with Trump. The surgery is presumably for the same shoulder ailment that Cohen cited in delaying his appearance before the Senate intelligence committee earlier this month.

The scheduled public hearing sets the stage for what is expected to be one of the most high profile congressional testimonies in history, although Cohen will not talk about matters related Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe or an ongoing investigation by federal prosecutors in New York, Cohen's lawyer, Lanny Davis said last week.
