It was then reported that police suspected Smollett of paying them to stage the attack, and now Smollett has officially been charged with filing a false police report, Variety reports.

Smollett's lawyers issued a statement, saying, "As a victim of a hate crime who has cooperated with the police investigation, Jussie Smollett is angered and devastated by recent reports that the perpetrators are individuals he is familiar with". Many Hollywood celebrities and prominent politicians, especially Democrats, expressed sympathy for Smollett on Twitter or in verbal comments following the alleged attack and condemned the bigotry and homophobia Trump has fueled since taking office two years ago. If convicted, he could face up to three years in prison and potentially be forced to pay for the cost of the investigation into his reported assault.

The sources said one of the brothers held a rope and poured bleach on Smollett while the other wore a plain red hat and yelled slurs at Smollett.
