Google announces significant expansion of Google Assistant at Mobile World Congress

Added to the aforementioned feature, Google Maps users with Android devices will be able to ask Google Assistant to read out messages and enable hands-free reply messages with popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and SMS. Furthermore, Google confirmed the launch of Nokia, TCL, Xiaomi, and LG Phones with assistant buttons after following Samsung's Bixby assistant.

Google is also bringing the Assistant to Google Maps in all Assistant phone languages including in the United Kingdom, while more languages are also now supported for pairing (being able to switch between two languages), you can select any language pairing from Korean, Hindi, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Dutch, in addition to the languages supported from the get-go: English, Spanish, German, French, Japanese and Italian. Google says this all happens on-device too, instead of in the cloud. This new move is created to let you use the Google Assistant to add information to your text messages.

This contextual popup can appear both when a user mentions something that triggers it and manually from the "Plus" icon on the Messages chat interface.

The announcement signals Google's increasing investment in Messages as it plans to shut down its smart-messaging app, Allo, in March.

Does this mean Google Assistant will be saving information based on the context of conversations? Assistant buttons, when clicked, trigger an information card that gets inserted into the thread upon the sender's choosing- how it'll look on the other end is not certain. Select one of these and you'll get some answers that you can share back in the chat. Google is also rolling out new language pairs for bilingual support, with Korean, Hindi, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Dutch joining the initial siix languages: English, Spanish, German, French, Japanese and Italian.
