Iran's Rouhani rejects resignation of foreign minister Zarif

President Hassan Rouhani has expressed his support for Zarif but has so far not officially rejected his resignation.

Zarif responded the same way he offered his shock resignation: via Instagram.

Zarif's resignation and public comments highlight the struggle of moderate Iranian politicians to engage with the West in the face of hardline opposition at home and aggressive USA policies.

In this photo released by the Syrian official news agency SANA, Syrian President Bashar Assad, left, shakes hands with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, before their meeting in Tehran, Syria, February 25, 2019.

The timing led analysts to speculate that Iran's top diplomat was being sidelined on key foreign policy issues, such as the country's role in propping up Assad's government after almost eight years of civil war in Syria.

Zarif "is indeed in charge of the Islamic Republic of Iran's foreign policy", Soleimani said in comments carried by the Guards' official website Sepah News.

General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards' foreign operations arm, the Quds Force, was present on Monday for Assad's meetings with both Khamenei and Rouhani.

Though the rest of the parties to the the nuclear accord - Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany - have said they will maintain the deal along with Iran, they have difficulties overcoming the U.S. sanctions, which have impacted the Iranian economy, causing its rial currency to plummet.

Analysts say Rouhani faces growing political pressure from hard-liners within the government as the nuclear deal unravels.

But the deal was later challenged by the administration of President Donald Trump, which pulled America out of the accord.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had tweeted that it made no difference to Washington, whether Zarif stays or goes. "As long as I am here Iran will not get nuclear weapons", he wrote in Hebrew on Twitter.

"As a modest servant, I have had no concern other than elevating [our] foreign policy and the credibility of the Foreign Ministry as the person in charge of advancing foreign policy and protecting national interests and people's rights in the global arena", Zarif wrote, according to Press TV.

Rouhani praised Zarif's "relentless efforts and endeavors" in bearing the "heavy responsibility" of the foreign affairs portfolio, and stressed that Zarif was the pointman in the conduct of Iran's foreign policy.
