About 3,500 people in two dozen communities along the river remained under evacuation orders. The nearby town of Monte Rio was also isolated by floodwaters and all roads leading to it were swamped.

"Other rivers in the area are also going to see major flooding; the Navarro River is now above flood stage and is forecast to crest at 35.4 feet at Navarro late [Tuesday]". Authorities have reopened the roads into two towns cut off for days by a rain-swollen river and residents and work crews have started cleaning up the muck that flooding left behind.

A Northern California river that surged over its banks after days of rain has flooded some 2000 homes, businesses and other buildings.

But it reached almost 46 feet Wednesday night, and the National Weather Service predicted that major flood conditions will continue Thursday because it will take time for all that water to recede.

Generally dry weather was expected for the area late Thursday and into Friday afternoon, Jones said. The river was expected to fall below flood stage at the end of Thursday.

More rain is forecast through Sunday - except on Thursday.

TV footage of local media showed torrential rains have flooded the Russian River in Sonoma County Wednesday, turning the town of Guerneville in western Sonoma into an "island," as the river reached its highest level of 14 meters in 25 years at night.

"A slow-moving storm is moving into the West Coast from the Pacific, which has been the cause of very heavy rainfall that has occurred over northern and central California", Accuweather meteorologist Frank Strait reported. One guest's rental vehicle got stuck in the water. Those trapped by deeper water were taken to safety in boats.

The Napa River also crested on Wednesday, but the damage across Napa County was relatively minor compared to what Sonoma County has suffered. "Too many people are driving into water", Baxman told the Press Democrat newspaper.

Sonoma County supervisor James Gore said it could be "100-year storm material" and advised everyone to evacuate if they were ordered to, just as his family was doing.

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Department posted on Facebook, "Good morning. There is no way to prepare for that", Andre Vazquez, the manager of the one-story River Inn Grill in Guerneville, recently told the the Sacramento Bee, adding that his restaurant could be completely submerged.

The National Weather Service categorizes any floods above 45 feet as "disastrous" for Guerneville, predicting that almost all its downtown will flood at that height.
